You want to step away and move away from all that mess, not realizing that the mess IS your key and the spark that will ignite your change and transformation from your fears, anxieties, traumas, shame, blame, and guilt that keep you from stepping out and being seen as who you really are…by yourself and others.
For example, those old feelings of shame and guilt (that you don’t understand and keep trying to escape) may not even be yours! They might really belong to your aunt who never married. Why? Because she loved someone deeply and he left her, she never loved again, and felt like she was not good enough and that she did something to cause it. And now you can’t have a good relationship. You may guilty and of lesser value, and you don’t know why.
A farfetched notion, you think? Well, this type of dynamic is more common than you consciously realize.

Case Study: An Anxious Young
Man, A father’s father is kicked out of
his house by his wife, tired of her husband’s drinking
ways. The father, then a young man, gets too close to
his mom to help her, and loses his dad. He didn’t see
his father again for years. He grows up and gets
married. He has two boys. He is in the military and
spends most of his life away from the family; coming and
going. His youngest son is only 10 months old when his
father goes away for years.
His oldest son
enlisted in the military and is deployed to Father repeats the absence of his father with his children. His youngest son is angry. Father became too close to his mother, and so does his son. Father misses his dad but doesn’t have permission to openly miss him. Son misses his dad and also doesn’t have permission to miss him, but in a different way. Mother misses her husband and is angry, and son is also loyal to mom and angry with dad for her. Son becomes anxious, depressed, and doesn’t do well in life and in school. I helped this young man see that his father repeated what happened to him, and that he needed both parents to feel whole and to succeed. I helped his father to see the same pattern, that his son really missed him, and that it is ok to feel again; he stopped feeling when his dad was kicked out of the house. By the end of our sessions, the father could look at his son, and when he hugged his son, the son said, “This is the first time I can remember being hugged by my father.” |
